It seems that many of my friends have acquired pets during the pandemic, and there appear to be challenges if you wish to travel with them long distances.

At least you can save a bit on pet fees and earn some bonus points if you decide to stay at an IHG affiliated hotel.

I am surprised that there are no forms to fill or more specified URLs to use for bookings, and the T&Cs are clear that you merely need to be an IHG Rewards member to qualify.

The rate appears to make the most sense when the discount is 30%, and there are no other discounted rates available that is likely the case close to the stay date.

Conclusion

I am glad that IHG has extended its Sports Rate for markets outside of North America. It allows Sports-affiliated travelers to save over Best Available Rates while having maximum flexibility.

IHG Sports Rate is available at all IHG US, Canada, and Europe Hotels with savings of at least 10% off for 1 – 9 rooms. No advance booking required. IHG, however, continues to offer a 15% discount for shareholders that own at least one share of the company.

Rate Rules:

The rules of this rate are quite contradictory. They say both that the rate is fully flexible and no deposit is required and that the rate is prepaid and no changes are allowed.

Based on the few searches I executed, this is a flat 15% off discount and available at most hotels.  It can make sense when no other discounted rates are available.

Hyatt has extended the offer through May 31, 2023, and there are 27 hotels on the list with varying expiry dates.

IHG preloads 2% of hotel room inventory under this rate plan that can be booked a maximum of 90 days before the intended stay.

Employees can book up to two rooms and stay a maximum of seven nights at each hotel in a calendar year per program (they can utilize both IVEDI and IVED2 rates).

Unlike Hilton and Marriott, IHG’s employee rates are not IHG One Rewards qualifying for points, elite nights, or benefits.

Standard Employee Rate

This is the most deeply discounted rate for IHG employees.

The rate plan is widely available for a midweek stay in early September.

This is a more interesting rate plan because hotels can load it for several room types, which is 35% to 50% off.

It was not as widely available for a stay in London as the standard employee rate.

Conclusion

IHG could do better and extend IHG One Rewards benefits for employee rates. If Hilton and Marriott can do it, why not IHG?

This would help employee buy-in for learning, knowing, and delivering tier benefits associated with each elite level when they have skin in the game.

And we should not be jealous about low rates extended to hospitality sector employees. The pay tends to be on the low side, and it benefits everyone that they try and stay at various brands learning best practices along the way.

Employee Rate Methodology

New Hotel Opening rates will be based upon the 12-month market class tract average. Once the hotel has a 12-month rolling ADR, the Standard Employee Rate will be adjusted as outlined for existing hotels:

IHG will pre-load room inventory for the Standard Employee Room Benefit Program for each night of the next calendar year for each hotel:

Conclusion

IHG continues to offer flat discounts to Visa and Mastercard cardholders in Asia-Pacific. It may make sense to check both plans if one doesn’t return the discount (as they are separate.
